• The Viola is a member of the string family of instruments. It's the middle voice of string family between Violin and Cello. Its sound is similar to the Violin, but with a larger body, it has a lower pitch, and a rich dark tone. A Viola player produces sound by pulling a bow across one or more of the strings. • The Cello is a member of the string family of instruments. It's the second largest bowed string instrument, the double bass being the largest. The Cello has been described as the closest sounding instrument to the human voice. Like the other members of the string family, it is played by drawing a bow over the strings. The Cello is a standard part of orchestra and string quartets, and has recently been popularized by world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. • The Flute is a member of the Woodwind family. Unlike the woodwind instruments with reeds, a Flute is a metal, reedless wind instrument that produces sound from the flow of air across an opening. Flutes are the earliest known musical instruments. A number of flutes have been discovered dating as far back as 40,000 years ago. • The Clarinet is a part of the Woodwind family that uses a wooden reed when played. When air is blown through the opening between the reed and its mouthpiece, the reed vibrates and produces its sound. The five sections of the modern Bb Clarinet are the Bell, Lower Joint, Upper Joint, Barrel, and the Mouthpiece. When the sections are assembled properly, the instrument is ready to play. • The Saxophone is a member of the Woodwind family that uses a wooden reed to produce its sound. It is one of the more modern instruments, invented by Adolphe Sax in 1841. It is one of the most powerful and vocal of the Woodwind instruments. The 3 sections of the Saxophone are the Body, Neck, and Mouthpiece. When the sections are properly assembled, the instrument is ready to play. The drum is played by striking it with a drumstick or any other form of a beat, including brushes or rutes. Today in popular music, especially with rock drum kits, the snare is used to play the backbeat pattern. Snare drums are also common in drum lines, and a key part as musical marching ensemble. Percussion instruments are available to 5th graders participating in Experienced Band lessons.
