When air is blown through the opening between the reed and its mouthpiece, the reed vibrates and produces its sound. The five sections of the modern Bb Clarinet are the Bell, Lower Joint, Upper Joint, Barrel, and the Mouthpiece. When the sections are assembled properly, the instrument is ready to play. • The Saxophone is a member of the Woodwind family that uses a wooden reed to produce its sound. It is one of the more modern instruments, invented by Adolphe Sax in 1841. It is one of the most powerful and vocal of the Woodwind instruments. The 3 sections of the Saxophone are the Body, Neck, and Mouthpiece. When the sections are properly assembled, the instrument is ready to play. • The Snare Drum is the drum with strands of metal "snares" stretched across the bottom drumhead. The drum is played by striking it with a drumstick or any other form of a beat, including brushes or rutes. Today in popular music, especially with rock drum kits, the snare is used to play the backbeat pattern. Snare drums are also common in drum lines, and a key part as musical marching ensemble. Percussion instruments are available to 5th graders participating in Experienced Band lessons.
